PostgreSQL has surprisingly good full text search. For most early stage products, it is more than enough. You get tsvector columns, GIN indexes, ranking functions, and the ability to search across multiple tables without adding a single new dependency. We use it as the default for every product we build, and it handles far more than most founders expect.
But there is a ceiling. And if your product is search heavy, you will hit it.
The question is not whether PostgreSQL search is "bad." It is whether your users need things PostgreSQL was never designed to provide. Knowing where that line is saves you from two equally expensive mistakes: migrating too early or migrating too late.
What PostgreSQL Search Does Well
Before you start evaluating dedicated search engines, understand what PostgreSQL actually gives you. With proper indexing and configuration, you can get:
- Full text search with ranking across millions of rows in single digit milliseconds
- Trigram matching for fuzzy search and typo tolerance using the pg_trgm extension
- Weighted search where titles rank higher than body text
- Phrase matching and proximity search with tsquery operators
- Language aware stemming so "running" matches "run"
For a SaaS product with a few hundred thousand records, this covers 90% of what users expect from a search bar. It lives inside your existing database, requires no additional infrastructure, and benefits from the same backup and replication strategy you already have. This is the approach we used for Traderly where search performance across product listings needed to be fast but the dataset was well within PostgreSQL range.
If your search is a feature of the product, PostgreSQL is fine. If search is the product, keep reading.
The Signs That PostgreSQL Search Is Not Enough
We have worked on enough search heavy applications to recognize the patterns. You are outgrowing PostgreSQL search when:
Autocomplete needs to feel instant. PostgreSQL can do prefix matching with trigrams, but building a responsive, typo tolerant autocomplete that returns results as the user types each character requires a different data structure. Dedicated search engines use inverted indexes optimized for exactly this use case.
You need faceted filtering at scale. Ecommerce products, marketplaces, and directory sites need users to filter by category, price range, location, rating, and availability simultaneously while seeing accurate counts for each filter option. PostgreSQL can technically do this with multiple indexes and CTEs, but performance degrades as the number of facets and the dataset size grow.
Relevance tuning becomes a product requirement. When stakeholders start asking "why does this result show up before that one?", you need fine grained control over scoring. PostgreSQL offers ts_rank and ts_rank_cd, but dedicated search engines give you field boosting, function scoring, decay functions for recency, and custom similarity algorithms.
Geospatial search combined with text search. If users are searching "pizza near me" and you need to blend text relevance with geographic proximity, you are combining two search paradigms that PostgreSQL handles separately. PostGIS gives you excellent geospatial queries, but merging those results with full text relevance scoring is where things get complicated.
You are indexing unstructured content. PDFs, emails, chat transcripts, HTML pages. If you need to extract text from documents and make it searchable, you are building an ingestion pipeline that dedicated search engines handle natively.
The Architecture Decision
When you decide PostgreSQL is not enough, the architecture question is not "which search engine?" It is "how does search fit into your overall system?"
There are two primary patterns:
Pattern 1: Search as a Read Replica
Your PostgreSQL database remains the source of truth. A synchronization layer keeps your search index updated as data changes. All write operations go through your main database, and the search engine is only used for queries.
This is the pattern we recommend for most products. It is simple to reason about, keeps your transactional logic in one place, and means you can rebuild your search index from your database at any time. The sync layer can be as simple as a database trigger that pushes changes to a queue, or a change data capture stream.
The tradeoff is eventual consistency. When a user creates a record, there is a delay (typically milliseconds to seconds) before it appears in search results. For most applications, this is invisible to users. For real time collaboration tools, it might matter.
Pattern 2: Search as the Primary Store
Some products need the search engine to be the authoritative data store for certain types of content. Think log aggregation, analytics dashboards, or content platforms where the primary access pattern is search and the data does not need relational integrity.
This is a more complex architecture and we only recommend it when the use case genuinely demands it. You lose ACID transactions, foreign key constraints, and the ability to join search data with relational data in a single query. For most SaaS products, this creates more problems than it solves.

What to Evaluate
When selecting a search solution, the criteria that matter most are:
Operational complexity. Running a search cluster is not free. You need to think about indexing throughput, query latency percentiles, cluster health, reindexing strategies, and failover. Managed services remove some of this burden, but you are trading operational complexity for cost and vendor lock in.
Sync reliability. The hardest part of adding a dedicated search engine is not the search engine itself. It is keeping the index in sync with your database. You need to handle creates, updates, deletes, bulk reindexing, and edge cases where the sync fails. This is where most teams underestimate the effort.
Query capabilities. Not all search engines are equal. Some excel at full text search but lack strong filtering. Others are great at analytics queries but mediocre at relevance scoring. Match the engine to your actual query patterns, not a feature comparison matrix.
Cost at scale. Search infrastructure costs scale with the size of your index and your query volume. Model out what your costs look like at 10x your current data size. Some solutions that seem affordable at small scale become prohibitively expensive as you grow. The Hybrid Approach
The architecture we implement most often is a hybrid. PostgreSQL handles simple lookups, filtering on indexed columns, and any query that touches a single table with straightforward WHERE clauses. The dedicated search engine handles full text queries, autocomplete, faceted navigation, and any query where relevance scoring matters.
This means your application layer has two query paths, which adds complexity to your codebase. But it lets you use each tool for what it does best rather than forcing one tool to do everything.
The key implementation detail is a clear routing layer. Your application should have a search service abstraction that decides which backend handles each query. This keeps the complexity contained and makes it possible to swap search engines later without touching every feature that uses search.
When to Make the Move
Our recommendation is straightforward: start with PostgreSQL and migrate when you have evidence that it is not meeting user expectations. Not when you think it might not be enough. Not when you read a blog post about how another company uses a dedicated search engine. When your users are telling you, through behavior or feedback, that search is failing them.
The migration path from PostgreSQL full text search to a dedicated engine is well understood. If you have been writing clean search abstractions in your code (and you should be), the application layer changes are manageable. The infrastructure and sync layer is the real work, and that is the same regardless of when you do it.
